Charles Randon, elder brother of F.Randon, was born at Stapleford, Nottinghamshire in
1840, but lived most of his life at Hathern where he died in 1910. A useful
bat, good fast-medium bowler and slip field, he had several professional
engagements, including many years at Rugby School. Frederick J.Randon, also born
at Stapleford in 1845, was the most famous of the Hathern family; when Charles
and Fred were at their best, a team of Randons could be got together which was
strong enough to challenge any team in the district. F.J.was an excellent fast
round-arm bowler and is one of the few men who have bowled W.G.Grace twice in
one match (in 1874 for 0 and 8). From 1874 he was a member of the groundstaff
at Lord’s for several years….. He played for M.C.C.ground staff and for
Leicestershire…. He met with a serious accident in 1881 when he was struck on
the head by a ball at Lord’s and from which he never really recovered. He died
at Hathern in 1883
