Schools in Hathern 1833
The following is from the Abstract of Educational Returns of 1833 (page 486) and gives details of 5 daily schools and 3 Sunday schools.
H ATHERN Parish (Pop 1,289).
Five Daily Schools :-
One whereof, called "the Parish School," contains 37 males, and is partly supported by a yearly payment of 5l. from the trustees of certain charity land, for which 10 poor children are taught to write and keep accounts ; partly by a donation of 10l. from the lord of the manor, for which about 14 are instructed in reading, whose parents do not rent more than 10l. per annum ; the remaining 13 children receive instruction at the expense of their parents
Another School contains 5 males and 12 females; and in the other three are 37 males and
47 females; these children are all instructed at the expense of their parents.
Three Sunday Schools
In one of which are 123 males and 111 females, who attend the Established Church ; this School has a lending Library attached, and all the children above ten years of age receive instruction in writing and accounts one evening during the week.
Another consists of 24 males and 15 females, and is connected with Methodists.
And the other (commenced 1830), of 22 males and 13 females, and appertains to Baptists; these Schools are supported by voluntary contributions.
