In June 1897 the country celebrated the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria. A bank holiday was declared for Tuesday June 22nd and hundreds of thousands watched the royal parade in London. In Hathern, preparations for the big event started weeks earlier with various committee and public meetings. Money was collected to fund the celebrations which were to take place on Wednesday June 23rd. Here you can see newspaper clippings of the preparations.  After the event the remaining funds were meant to be spent on a Jubilee Tree but you can read about its unfortunate demise here. Below you can see reports of the day's activities and a photo from our events gallery which may have been taken on that day in front of the rectory wall.  jubilee news cuttings 3 of 3 001  wwi vict celeb
